Jewelry with soul
THE JEWELER
A MAGICAL WORLD
Adam Mads Heindorf is a master at creating personalized jewelry. Drawing inspiration from a mysterious and unique universe, his creations are imbued with symbolism. This jewelry invites interpretation like a poem and admiration like a work of art, and no two people interpret the symbols in the same way. By remelting old jewelry, the symbolic value can also be enhanced. It doesn’t get any more personal than that.
We melt hearts and create memories.
Use the heirlooms from your drawer to have new, contemporary jewelry made that captures old memories.
Come visit us and help us create new designs from your old gold and silver.
From the building known as “Little Rosenborg,” Heindorf’s studio overlooks the King’s Garden and the old castle housing the crown jewels. This provides daily inspiration for the workshop, where many new designs are created.
Adam Mads Heindorf started his business on Langeland, but soon discovered that his international style was very popular in the big city. Here, he has built up a loyal circle of customers who often participate in the design of custom jewelry. And it’s all conceived and crafted in his workshop on Gothersgade—his own little jewelry castle.
BACKGROUND
I’ve accumulated quite a few titles over the years. Everything from CEO, master goldsmith, jeweler, designer, event coordinator, artist, healer, yogi, seer, and much more… I’ve gained a wealth of experience through the school of life and had many different skilled mentors in various fields, for whom I am grateful.
This video was made as a brief introduction to me and the workshop back in 2018.
JEWELER
John Cloos and Steen Mechlenburg taught me the craft and art of jewelry making. They inspired me and laid the foundation for my craftsmanship.
This photo is a fond memory from my apprenticeship back in 2003, with my mentor John R. Cloos. In the background is the old security door of the goldsmith’s workshop, which was located in the former estate office of Tranekær Castle on Langeland.
John Cloos
John was a craftsman with about 50 years of experience in the industry, both in Denmark and abroad. John was both a skilled craftsman and an artist—he could create almost anything in the field of jewelry making. Throughout his career, John ran the shop “Kære ven” on Bredgade in Copenhagen, as well as several other businesses around Denmark. As he grew older, he retired to Langeland. That’s where I met John. I was about 15 years old and was deeply fascinated by watching him create the most beautiful jewelry from a lump of gold and some loose gemstones... Through John, I discovered my talent for working with jewelry. I knew this was my calling—and that John was meant to be my mentor. Fortunately, I had entrepreneurial parents who supported my dream, so when John wasn’t able to take me on as an apprentice, we opened a company the following year in the old estate office at Tranekær Castle and hired John as my teacher. There, I served as both director and apprentice at the same time.
Steen Mechenburg
Steen was an artist who, at some point in his life, decided he wanted to make jewelry. He bought tools and materials, moved to Crete with his then-wife Rikke Mechlenburg, and together they began creating jewelry art. I met Steen in his later years, when he wanted to retire to Langeland. I myself was probably around 18 years old at the time. Steen made some fantastic jewelry and had a different approach to the craft than I was used to. He was very into symbols and incorporated them into his works. It was very inspiring. Steen moved to Tranekær and joined my workshop. There, I learned Steen’s approach to making jewelry and began to combine different elements.
Copenhagen
In 2008, when I was about 22 years old, I moved to Copenhagen to start over. I left the family business behind and founded my new company, “Heindorf,” at Gothersgade 105, where I lived hand-to-mouth in the early days. It was quite an experience to start from scratch—going from having a large workshop, employees, and the family’s financial security to living in a basement beneath the workshop, with no windows and a dirt floor, where I could barely afford the rent. But it was a healthy and educational journey for which I am grateful today. I invested all my time and energy into the company, and the workshop grew steadily. More tools were added, more materials to work with, and customers discovered that I had moved, so many followed me. After some time, my sister also began an apprenticeship with me as a goldsmith, and since then many more have joined. The training takes four years, and it’s wonderful to follow the progress of my apprentices. To see them grow and spread their wings out into the world. I enjoy sharing my own passion and passing on the craft.
An educational journey
For many years, I thought it was all about becoming the biggest. Making as much money as possible. Hiring as many employees as possible. Being involved in everything. Being seen by as many people as possible. Taking my jewelry as far out into the world as I could. Production grew, along with salespeople, retailers, exhibitions, shows, the press, celebrities, royalty, international markets, Hollywood stars… I wanted it all… In the early days, it was great to draw on that energy and determination that just propelled me forward and allowed me to successfully build the company. But as with everything else, it’s about finding balance. At first, it was about survival, but once I had survived, I kept racing on anyway… I ended up becoming an administrative jack-of-all-trades, working around the clock, without taking weekends or vacations. It became incredibly stressful. I forgot the very essence of what I love about my work—the reason I became a goldsmith. But most importantly, I forgot myself…
It was a long and educational journey during which I also met so many wonderful people and had so many incredible experiences that I wouldn’t want to have missed. So I don’t regret a thing. That’s where I was. But I’m grateful that I managed to change course before it made me seriously ill.
In 2019, I began restructuring my business and my life and scaling back. This was followed by COVID-19 in 2020, which really helped me dial things down completely… Today, I enjoy being back at my jewelry bench, where I can focus on creating my one-of-a-kind pieces, being kreativ experimenting with materials. At the same time, I’m taking care of myself and tuning in to my inner self. I’m lowering my expectations of myself, accepting that I’m actually a mega-introvert and adapting my life accordingly, taking time off, and staying home on Langeland as much as possible, where inspiration grows everywhere in the beautiful nature.
The Transformation
As part of the transformation, I brought together four of my closest creative collaborators: Thomas Bickham, an interior designer; Steen Theodor Jensen, a graphic designer; Klaus Koenig, a copywriter; and Magnus, a tailor. They helped me transition into this new phase in the best possible way and plan the new vision and visual identity for my work as a goldsmith. We ended up changing the name of my jewelry brand back to the original “HEINDORF.” Steen helped create the new logo, into which we integrated the lotus star—a symbol that had long been my own for many years. Klaus helped craft the copy to present my work. Magnus helped me find a clothing style that better suited where I actually was, with more colors and shades than before, when everything was all black. Thomas helped remodel and furnish my studio into a magical universe that matches my works. One that contains both the raw, brutal masculine and the soft, delicate feminine. Where nature has truly come indoors. Looking back, it was a truly powerful transformation that worked on multiple levels and supported me in my own process of finding my footing and inner peace. I’m reminded of this every single time I open the door and step inside this fairy tale here at Lille Rosenborg.
SPIRITUALITY
I have been working intensively for a long time with my spiritual mentor, Ninna, in South Funen, focusing on my spiritual development and practice from a Buddhist perspective. This has included various types of healing, clairvoyance, symbols, chakras, tantric energy, creativity, meditation, personal development, and spiritual awareness in general. She has helped and inspired me to become aware of my talents—to understand what comes so naturally to me to work with—as well as to develop and combine my skills so that they form a cohesive whole.
I have also worked with Jette Holm for quite some time, exploring topics such as personal development, chakra jewelry, crystals, colors, essential oils, and much more. Jette has become a dear friend, and we hold workshops together on Langeland, focusing on everyday spirituality.
I took the Reiki Healing course with Natalia, who runs Reiki Healing Copenhagen. It has given me a better understanding of healing energy, and I’ve learned how to structure and systematize it. It’s a brilliant tool to have in everyday life, and I believe anyone can easily learn it. Natalia has also become a dear friend and an important part of my spiritual network.
Since 2011, I have been collaborating with Anne-Marie Østersø on angel jewelry, symbols, and clairvoyance.
Gill Edelveig from Langeland was my mentor in Iyengar Yoga for many years. I started practicing with her when I was around 20 years old and was captivated by yoga’s effect on both my body and my soul. I quickly incorporated it into my daily life, and it has stayed with me ever since—sometimes more than others. It’s also a fantastic tool to have in life. In 2022, I completed the yoga teacher training program with Simon Krohn. It has also been a wonderfully inspiring journey that has given me a deeper understanding of yoga.
In addition, there are many other people who have helped shape, inspire, and teach me throughout my life—both for short and long periods of time. I am very grateful for everything I have learned so far—and I look forward to everything I will learn as I continue on my journey through life.
Vision
I love creating jewelry that brings joy and makes a difference in people’s lives. I want to continue doing this for the rest of my life.
My dream is to continue building on our family home Sukkerfabrikken back home on Langeland, where I want to create a center for creative and spiritual development. All profits from my projects go directly toward developing the site.
